Frequently asked questions

The questions we get asked most, answered in full.

What you find on GASP!

What can I find on GASP!?

What happens in your neighborhood that no site puts in one place: closed roads, traffic and roadworks, accidents and alerts, blackouts and outages. And the rest of it too — street markets, block parties, local festivals, unannounced concerts in the square, lost things and lost pets. In Milan it’s posted by the people who live there, neighborhood by neighborhood.

Is GASP! free?

Yes, on iPhone and Android. There are ads: they’re what keeps it free. No subscription, and we don’t sell your data.

Do I have to sign up?

Yes. Email and password, or Google, or Apple. It matters because a report is only worth something if there’s an account behind it: without one, the feed would fill up with noise in an afternoon.

How is this different from the neighborhood WhatsApp group?

The group gives you everything its members write, wherever it happened. GASP! gives you what's happening in your area, with what just happened at the top. And nobody has to invite you: open the app and you see your neighborhood.

Privacy and identity

Can other people see who I am?

No. They see the nickname you pick — your email isn’t visible to any other user. You can join in, confirm and report without putting yourself out there.

If the app is anonymous, why does it ask for my email?

Your email is for your account: recovering your password, getting notifications. It doesn’t show up anywhere in the app. Anonymous means nobody links your nickname to your real identity, not that there’s no account.

What location do you collect?

Your approximate location, and only to show you content relevant to your area. When you post an event you place the pin yourself: you decide what to point at, and it doesn’t have to be where you are.

Can other people work out where I live?

No. The distances on the cards are worked out from the events, not from people. No user sees your location.

How do I delete my account, and what goes with it?

From your profile, whenever you want. Your nickname, email, notifications, the threads and cities you follow, and your location history all get deleted.

How it works

What do I see when I open the app?

Three tabs. Nearby: what’s happening where you are right now. Following: the areas you’ve chosen to follow, even when you’re somewhere else. Saved: the threads you’ve kept aside.

Can I follow a neighborhood I’m not in?

Yes, that’s the point of the Following tab. Your parents’ area, the one around the office, the one you go back to at weekends: the feed reaches you from far away too.

What does “confirmed” mean?

That other people close enough have seen the same thing and backed it up. It’s how a report goes from “someone says” to “this is actually happening”, with no moderator needed to check.

What if someone posts something false?

You can report any thread or message straight from the app. And that’s what confirmations are for too: a report nobody nearby confirms stays on its own, and it shows.

Do I get notifications?

Only for the threads you follow. If you save a thread or follow an area, we let you know when something happens there. No notifications for things you never asked to follow.
